Brief Bio:
An expert in the area of using political cartoons in social studies classrooms, Dr. Clifford T. Bennett is the chairman of the Department of Teacher Education and Professor of Social Studies Education at Cleveland State University. Dr. Bennett was previously an associate professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA., where he was the state co-director for National History Day and coordinator of the social studies education program. He has served on Advisory Boards of the Virginia Department of Education and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and on review panels for the U.S.Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Council for the Social Studies.  Prior to becoming a faculty member in higher education, he was a social studies teacher in the Cleveland Municipal School District (Ohio) and the Shaker Heights (Ohio) City School District.  

Dr. Bennett holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science from Lincoln University (Lincoln University, Pennsylvania); the Masters of Teaching in Education and History from John Carroll University (University Heights, Ohio); and the Doctor of Education in Social Studies Education from The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA). He has been a member of numerous Cleveland Metropolitan School District initiatives.  Some of these initiatives include: Success Tech High School Advisory Board; Single Gender Elementary School Advisory Board; Achievement Gap and Teacher Quality Committee; Early Childhood Advisory Committee; and the Institute of Learning Advisory Committee.

In recognition of his administrative achievements, he was the recipient of the prestigious 2007 Leadership and Service Award from the Alumni Society/College of Education at the Pennsylvania State University.   This award is given to an alumnus who has distinguished him or herself in their chosen profession, in or out of the field of education, and who has demonstrated leadership and service within a career and/or to a community.

Dr. Bennett is the author and senior consultant of two books and sixty two articles and book chapters.
