Brief Bio:
Dr. Gatica was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Cleveland State University in the Fall 1992 Quarter. He received tenure and was awarded promotion to Associate Professor in 1997, and was promoted to Professor in 2004.

Dr. Gatica received his Ph.D. degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. His research activities center on the application of Reaction Engineering principles towards investigating problems relevant to Materials Science, Chemical, Biomedical, and Environmental Engineering. His interests also include web-enhanced education and the integration of computers in Engineering curricula. Dr. Gatica has degrees in Chemistry, Applied Statistics, and Chemical Engineering. He has outstanding teaching, service, and scholarly records, with a very active research agenda. With a very productive career since his graduation and during his tenure at CSU, he is a recognized scholar in the international scientific community.

He is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). He has more than 150 technical presentations at national and international meetings, and more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of several editorial boards of Science and Technology publications, and is a frequent reviewer for  scientific publications and federal agencies.

Dr. Gatica¿s ¿Community Partnerships for HOPE¿ Project, a recruitment and minority advancement initiative, was the first Engineering initiative funded under the (CSU) Presidential Initiative Program. Dr. Gatica serves as a mentor for undergraduate minority and high-school students, and serves as an adviser and Scholarship sponsor for Esperanza (NE Ohio non-profit organization advocating to the advancement and education of Hispanics), currently co-chairs the Education Area Team for the Hispanic Roundtable of Greater Cleveland, and actively interacts with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

His research (w/S.N. Tewari) aimed at the development of hybrid C-C composites was the first CSU project supported by the OAI Core Program. His research with NASA GRC received a NASA Tech Brief Award in recognition for its scientific and technical merits. In 2004, Dr. Gatica was the first recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Adviser Award. In 2015, Dr. Gatica was selected by the Chemical Engineering Senior Class as the 2015 Outstanding Chemical Engineering Faculty. In 2015 was also recognized as Distinguished Faculty for Service to CSU. At the 2015 President¿s Convocation, was the first Hispanic faculty receiving the Jennie S. Hwang Award for Faculty Excellence, the highest distinction a faculty can receive at CSU. Selected among 40 applicants for a Senior Fulbright post in South America, Dr. Gatica was one of the three (3) CSU faculty selected as U.S. Fulbright Scholars for the AY 2008-2009.

Dr. Gatica has been instrumental in the advancement of the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland State University. Since coordinating Quarter-to-Semesters transition for the BSChE Program, Dr. Gatica has lead a number of curriculum modifications; most noticeably, the use of internet-based instruction and integration of process simulators throughout the curriculum. Since 1998 he has been the lead undergraduate academic adviser, program assessment coordinator, and Graduate Program Director.

Dr. Gatica is currently advising graduate students in the Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering and Doctor of Engineering Programs. In addition, he mentors graduate and undergraduate students. Since joining CSU, more than thirty (40) students have graduated under Dr. Gatica¿s supervision. In addition, he has served in more than fifty (50) thesis/dissertation committees in Engineering and Sciences.
