Brief Bio:
Dr. Lonnie R. Helton (AKA Lon) joined the faculty of the Department of Social Work in 1991, after an extensive practice career in the fields of community mental health, developmental disabilities, and medical social work. Originally from Maryville, Tennessee, he graduated from Berea College in Kentucky and then went on to earn his Master of Social Work at the University of Kentucky and his doctorate in Educational Foundations at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Helton is also a Licensed Independent Social Worker-Supervisor in Ohio and is actively involved with the National Association of Social Workers and the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups.

Dr. Helton teaches in both the Joint MSW and BSW degree programs. His teaching areas at the graduate level are: Social Work Practice with Small Systems; Advanced Practice with Small Systems I and II; HBSE: Large Systems; Group Work Practice, and Field Practicum. At the undergraduate level he teaches Human Behavior: Macro; Interventions II; and Field Practicum. He has also taught other undergraduate courses in micro-level interventions and micro-level human behavior.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP:

Dr. Helton has done research in the areas of practice with families and children, multicultural practice; practice with families with a developmentally challenged child, Appalachian culture, women of Appalachian heritage, health beliefs of seniors, and alternative medicine. He has a special interest in qualitative research and his recent research involves phenomenological and case study methods. Dr. Helton is a known scholar in Appalachian studies with a focus on support systems of urban Appalachians, alternative medicine, and the impact of migration. He has authored textbooks, book chapters, and refereed articles in the above areas of interest. In the summer of 2007, Dr. Helton traveled to India to do research on traditional healing practices of mountain tribal and coastal dwellers in the provinces of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Dr. Helton has been involved on multiple community boards and advisory groups and serves as an Independent Trainer for the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program, where he has also chaired committees on Multicultural Training for Child Welfare Practice. Dr. Helton became the Interim Director of the School of Social Work during the summer, 2012 semester.
