| Brief Bio: |
| Russ began teaching in the Cleveland State University Art Department in 1999 as a part-time Lecturer and joined the full-time faculty in 2004. Working in both printmaking and painting, he combines overtones of contemporary Surrealism and the spirit of German Expressionism with a meticulous technique to explore areas of psychological discomfort.
"To some extent," says Russ, "each of my images usually begins as a self-portrait of sorts, albeit a metaphorical rather than literal one. Most pieces are inspired by a specific event, emotion, or personal encounter, and the subject matter is carefully constructed to suggest the particular attitudes I'm attempting to convey. An entire world - figure, environment, space, and atmosphere - is devised within the borders of the image, all for the purpose of creating a distinct psychological setting. Every aspect of the subject matter is indirect and suggestive, and scenes tend to embody hints of existential despair, psychosexual conflict, as well as other forms of physical and mental discord. I often use ambiguous biomorphic elements to introduce a human presence without literal representation, while suggesting various fears, temptations, anxieties, and turmoil embedded in the human psyche."
Some exhibitions in which Russ has participated include The National Small Oil Painting Biennial in Wichita, Kansas; The Bradley International Drawing and Print Biennial, "In Dreams - The New Surrealists" at Altamira Galleries, Raleigh, North Carolina; "Double Vision" at the Dead Horse Gallery, Lakewood, Ohio; the Los Angeles Printmaking Society National Biennial; "Sexually Charged" at the Carmesi Gallery, Lawrence, Kansas; a solo exhibition of small prints at Eastern Oregon University; and the 13th Biennial "Sixty Square Inches" Small Print Exhibition at Purdue University, where a Purchase Award added his work to the university's permanent collection. His work has also been exhibited in Canada, France, Korea, China, Denmark, Turkey, and the UK. |
