Brief Bio:
Sugie Lee is an assistant professor in the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. and a M.S. in City and Regional Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, along with a M.S. and a B.S. in Urban Planning from Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. His major fields of research include land use planning, urban/metropolitan spatial structure, growth management/smart growth, urban/suburban decline and revitalization, and GIS.

His research focuses on alternative land use policies at the local and regional levels to encourage smart growth principles, enhance the vitality of central cities and inner-ring suburbs, reduce intra-metropolitan socioeconomic disparities and polarization, and preserve the natural environment at the fringe of metropolitan areas. His current research focuses on the inner-ring suburban decline and revitalization in the context of metropolitan smart growth strategies. He is also interested in the integrated research of land use with a variety of disciplines in urban planning such as transportation, housing, environment, and public health.

Research Interests:
His research focuses on local-and regional-level urban and regional planning policies that encourage smart growth principles, enhance the vitality of central cities and inner-ring suburbs, reduce intra-metropolitan socioeconomic disparities and polarization, and preserve the natural environment at the fringe of metropolitan areas. In particular, his research focuses on planning and policy issues dealing with inner-ring suburban decline and revitalization in the context of intra-metropolitan spatial differentiation.

His research also examines whether regional planning approaches such as growth management and urban containment policies lead to positive outcomes for inner-ring suburban revitalization and socioeconomic integration within a metropolitan area.

Furthermore, his interests in suburban decline and regional planning issues have focused on a variety of planning disciplines such as demographic and socioeconomic changes, land use planning, housing policies, economic development, neighborhood/community development, transportation, the environment and public health.  He is also interested in quantitative methods with applied statistics and spatial analysis with geographic information systems (GIS), which improve methodologies and mitigate the limitations of previous studies. Applications of such methodologies provide planners and policy makers, who have had to rely on traditionally accepted concepts and arguments, with valuable insights into public policy on city and regional planning.

Teaching Areas:
His teaching areas concentrate on three academic areas: Quantitative Methods, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Regional Issues and Planning.  These courses are in great demand by both undergraduate and graduate students in our college. He has taught four classes during the last three years: Applied Quantitative Reasoning I (UST/PDD/PAD 601), Introduction to GIS (UST/PDD/PAD 642 and UST/ENV 742), Advanced GIS (UST/PDD/PAD 643 and UST/ENV 743), and Regional Issues and Planning (UST/PDD 577 and UST 493).
