Brief Bio:
Terri L. Purcell, PhD., is Associate Professor in Literacy Education in the Department of Teacher Education at Cleveland State University (CSU), Cleveland, OH.  Before joining CSU in 2002, Dr. Purcell worked for ten years in the public schools in North Carolina and Virginia, serving as an elementary teacher, reading specialist, intervention specialist, and educational consultant.  Currently, Dr. Purcell is the coordinator for the Literacy program and teaches several graduate/undergraduate-level literacy courses. She also serves as the faculty-in-residence at the Campus International School, where she works closely with teachers and students.

Dr. Purcell specializes in early literacy development, with a commitment to helping students build a strong foundation for reading.  Her research has focused on the development of emergent literacy skills and expressive communication skills (oral language and writing). Dr. Purcell has served as co-director of the Reading First-Ohio Center and director of the Early Reading First Program at CSU.  She has written articles and a book chapter on early literacy intervention practices, literacy coaching, and professional development in literacy for preschool and elementary teachers.
