Brief Bio:
Michael Johnson, Ph.D., RN, PMH-BC, CNE, FAAN joined Cleveland State University (CSU) in 2022 as the Director and Chief Nursing Administrator for the School of Nursing. Dr. Johnson guides all aspects of the school's operations, including the nursing educational programs and curriculum, accreditation and compliance, faculty affairs, and clinical and community partnerships. Previously, he worked at Nevada State College, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Johnson is an internationally recognized researcher and scholar on health disparities and inequities among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. He has primarily focused on elucidating determinants of cervical cancer screening and healthcare services uptake. He is an expert qualitative and mixed-methods researcher. He has published nearly 30 peer-reviewed research articles and textbook chapters and has delivered nearly 40 conference presentations.

Dr. Johnson has an eclectic clinical background and has worked in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, home health care, nephrology, psychiatric and behavioral health, and corrections. He has taught various undergraduate and graduate courses, including qualitative research, organizational leadership, psychiatric mental health, community/public health, and evidence-based practice.  

Dr. Johnson, a first-generation high school and college graduate, earned his Ph.D. in Nursing Science from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse.
