Biography

Meshack Owino, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his B.Ed. and M.A at Kenyatta University, Kenya, and another M.A. and Ph.D. at Rice University, Houston, Texas. As a professor at CSU, Dr. Owino primarily teaches courses on pre-colonial and modern Africa, Eastern Africa, Kenya, and South Africa. Dr. Owino has written many articles focusing on the social history of African soldiers during the pre-colonial and colonial periods as well as on Africa and the World Wars in general. His latest article, "The Nature of British Propaganda in Their African Colonies during World War II: The Example of Kenya," can be found in the Journal of African Military History, Online, January 22, 2025, doi: https://doi.org/10.1163/24680966-bja10023. Dr. Owino also has interests in the digital media and Africa and has written many articles documenting the intersections between digital humanities and public history in Africa. Dr. Owino has won many grants, including two major Digital Humanities grants with J. Mark Souther from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The first of these two NEH grants (with J. Mark Souther) focused on “Curating Kisumu: Adapting Mobile Interpretation in East Africa” (2014-15) and the second one dealt with “Curating East Africa: A Platform and Process for Location-based Storytelling in the Developing World” (2017-18). Dr. Owino’s research and writing also deals with the origin, nature, and impact of ethnic nationalism on modern African states.
