Biography
Rachel Gordon Loube (Pronounced like “Lobe”) is a filmmaker and educator driven to create work of nuance, humor, and heart. She received her MFA in Social Documentary Film from the School of Visual Arts, with High Honors, in 2011. Her MFA thesis film, “Every Tuesday: A Portrait of the New Yorker Cartoonists”, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2012 and won a Student Academy Award® in 2013. In her work as a video editor, Rachel’s collaborated with companies such as Doctors Without Borders, Zipcar, and Alibaba.
Rachel is currently in post-production on "Descendants of Devenishuk," her feature documentary film debut. It's a personal, coming-of-age essay film - funny, searching, and woven with archival audio of the filmmaker's great-grandmother and mother. The film follows a journey back to the small Lithuanian town her great-grandmother left in 1912, tracing a quiet longing for home and roots across generations. At its heart, it asks what it means to become an adult: to make the choices that are right for you, even when they disappoint the people who love you most. The documentary draws on a lineage of first-person cinema: the wandering self-inquiry of Nanni Moretti's Caro Diario, the fragmented intimacy of Chantal Akerman's No Home Movie, and the wry observational eye of Richard Leacock's Les Oeufs à la Coque.
Education and mentorship are deeply important to Rachel. She began her career as an educator teaching film production at the graduate level at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She is thrilled to be entering her second year as a Visiting Instructor at Cleveland State University's School of Film and Media Arts, where she continues to instruct and mentor the next generation of visual storytellers and filmmakers.
