Heat and mass transfer in porous media, microscale heat exchangers, freezing and melting, refrigeration system performance, renewable energy applications in buildings, modeling and simulation in building energy systems.

Teaching interests

Thermal and fluids science and engineering include, thermodynamics, fluids mechanics, heat transfer, phase change, sustainable energy, HVAC system design.

Biography

Dr. Yong X. Tao is Betty L. Gordon Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor, Director of Center for Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency and Sustainability (IERS), and past department chair of Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University. Prior to joining CSU he has had various academic leadership roles, as founding dean of College of Engineering & Computing at Nova Southeastern University, department chair of Mechanical & Energy Engineering with University of North Texas (UNT), and associate dean of the College of Engineering & Computing at Florida International University. At UNT he was also PACCAR Endowed Professor, Distinguished Research Professor, founding director of PACCAR Technology Institute and Zero Energy Research Lab. He was also director of two research labs at FIU. In 2005, he was the faculty leader of the award-winning Solar Decathlon entry. During 2008 International Olympics, he served as Project Director of the American House, as playing a vital role in building better international collaboration “in the area of energy-efficient buildings” (quote from then U.S. Secretaries of Commence and Energy.) Dr. Tao's experience and dedication to the success of students, faculty and staff resulted in sustained collaboration among multidisciplinary research and education. Dr. Tao is an accomplished scholar in thermal/fluids sciences, renewable energy & energy efficiency in buildings. He has produced over 175 technical publications.. His research has attracted more than $21M funding from the US federal agencies and industries, including multidisciplinary research network projects & leading researchers from numerous universities. He is past president and founding board director of American Society of Thermal & Fluids Engineers (ASTFE), fellow of ASTFE, a fellow of ASME, past chair of ASME Heat Transfer Division, and past editor in chief of Heat Transfer Research and a licensed Professional Engineer. He received his Ph.D. from University of Michigan.
