Teaching Climate Change and Climate Justice

Project: Research

Grant Details

Description

The Cleveland Teaching Collaborative (CTC) seeks funding for 10-15 case study essays from Northeast Ohio instructors (PK-12 and higher education) that will amplify the work of the NEO Youth Climate Action Fund, a local organization that supports climate research led by students ages 15-21. Given the increasing concerns about issues related to climate change, and the urgency of educating the next generation, the CTC is excited to partner with local educators to highlight this theme and showcase the work of talented mentors working with the NEO Climate Action Fund.

Several teachers in NEO are already actively engaged in the effort to raise awareness about climate change, finding meaningful ways to involve students in this work and integrate this important issue into their institution’s curriculum. In addition, to writing a case study essay, authors will have the opportunity to join a reflective group discussion to discuss the challenges and rewards of teaching climate change with the rest of the cohort.

The Cleveland Teaching Collaborative is an award-winning working group for research, reflection, and support for educators of all levels in Northeast Ohio. The CTC is committed to sharing teaching and learning practices across NEO, and each case study is an opportunity to spotlight innovative and creative instruction such as this essay “Moving Walls” by Charles Ellenbogen and Jason White. The climate change and climate justice essays would be our sixth cohort of case studies, building on a successful history of publishing and reflecting on instructor experiences of teaching and learning in the Cleveland area (https://cleteaching.org/tag/case-study/).

Support from this will provide a $200 honorarium to each case study author, going directly to the educators doing this important work and fostering a dialogue between educators in the region.
