Abstract
One vexing issue that has challenged treatment centers, colleges, and parents for decades is poor academic achievement among young adults recovering from substance use disorders. The traditional advice for those who are newly sober is to delay educational pursuits until a year or more of sobriety has been achieved. This article describes a new clinical social work treatment model, which places educational reintegration as an early treatment goal for young adults with substance use disorders. The varied roles of social work professionals in this process are described along with suggestions for future research.
