Abstract

Although research on youth personality is not as well developed as in adults, there is much we do know about the trait of antagonism. In this chapter, we delineate its relationships with other normal personality traits, as well as its similarities with and distinctions from adult antagonism. We also review its relationships with psychopathology and discuss factors that contribute to the development of antagonism. Overall, this chapter reviews evidence that understanding trait antagonism from a developmental perspective can improve our ability to recognize it at a young age, assess risk for later problems, and monitor change over time.
