Applying the Collective-Individualism Framework for the Data Analysis of a Rapid Rural Participatory Research Methodology

Abstract

Following a group work training session, social work students were assigned to various villages to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills by completing a Rapid Rural Participatory Research Methodology (RPRM) for field practice. They organized focus groups to collect data on women’s needs, realities, and aspirations. Then, they analyzed the data and organized their findings in pyramids and Venn diagrams revealing women’s needs, social and economic organizations, and their financial and economic networks. The author of the current study selected four of the students’ reports to complete a model analysis applying Hofstede’s Individualism-Collectivism to analyze the RPRM findings. The results revealed the predominance of collectivistic over individualistic orientations in rural women’s needs, organizations, and financial and economic networks. Discussing these findings, the author illustrates the predominance of collectivistic over individualistic orientations and options, despite the constant assaults from the endorsers of individualism in rural communities.
