Abstract
Calls for using technology in mathematics education have been accompanied by many research projects. However there is little research or discussion on the change needed in the methods used to assess learning in such environments. Assessment methods in mathematics continue to be traditional paper and pencil, typically short answer or multiple choice, which provide limited information about a student's mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding. The purpose of this study was to explore how mathematics assessment can change when technology is an important feature of classroom instruction. This article describes strategies for designing or modifying assessments items to take advantage of technology thus eliciting more information about students' understanding.
