BEING HER NOW: FEMININE IDENTITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

January 26 – March 26, 2016 University Gallery Panel: Thursday, February 11, 5:30, TETC 153 Performances & Party, Thursday March 3, 5-8pm, University Gallery What does it mean to be a woman in the twenty-first century? How are we representing the realities of contemporary women’s lives and issues? How are we engaging with historic ideas of feminism and femininity? The media would have us believe that gender is more fluid than ever, but does this fluidity—at least as it plays out in the mainstream media—actually represent a real challenge to stereotypical gender norms that many feel hemmed in by? Feminists have increasingly grappled with the ways that intersectional identity complicates notions of femininity, inflecting the way in which women continue to strive to make diverse voices heard. This exhibition presents artworks that engage with these questions and seek to explore diverse ways of being a woman in the twenty-first century. Participating artists include: Allison Baker, Margarita Correia, Barbara Lekus, Jesse Harrod, Laura Kaufman, Khanh Le, Spooky Boobs Collective, Sidney Mullis, Cigdem Slankard, Malena Barnhart, Eunsu Kang & Donald Craig, Carl Grauer, Verónica Casado Hernández, and Adriana Varella, with performances on March 3rd by: Lara Nguyen, Ayana Evans, Liss LaFleur, Ursula Scherrer and Vita and the Woolf!
