Abstract

An experimental investigation is conducted to study the melting characteristics of a solid particle in a flowing fluid. An ice sphere and an ice cylinder are used to represent the solid particle. This experiment serves as a basis for further improvement of numerical modeling on the convective melting of a single particle or a packed bed. The process of convective melting of an ice sphere in a horizontal, flowing water is visualized by using of a digital video camera and an infrared camera. From the digital video images the shape changes of the ice sphere are measured under controlled flow rate and supply water temperature, and the melting rate is determined. The temperature distribution of the water around an ice cylinder is obtained from the infrared images. The trend in melting process is described and analyzed. The melting rates are presented as a function of upstream flow velocity.
