Abstract

This article is an expanded version of the conference paper I gave at the "Cultural Crossings" symposium in October, 2018. It is nearly finished, and I am debating which journal to send it to. I submitted it to The French Review. After receiving readers' comments, I revised and resubmitted it. It isnow accepted in it's final form and will appear in Volume 93, no. 3 in March 2020. Note that this is a long article (6,000) words with two additional appendices.
