This historic marker commemorates the desegregation of Cleveland’s public schools. During the 1950s and 1960s, segregation in the Cleveland Public Schools stood at the center of the city’s civil rights struggle. In response, the African American community mobilized as never before—organizing pickets, sit‑ins, and marches, many inspired by strategies of the southern civil rights movement—to challenge institutional racism and dismantle segregation in Cleveland.
