Abstract
This invited presentation examines an iconic portrait of the indigenous heroine/anti-heroine La Malinche, consort of the conqueror Cortes, used on a Mexican banknote from 1900 to 1903. It shows how the original source figure was transformed from a purely native representation through a mestiza (mixed) look to a more European appearance on the note. It also explores how the vignette was employed to help forge a new national "imaginary" (image-base) that for the first time included and celebrated Mexico's aboriginal identity. Proposal abstract and bibliography submitted for peer review, pending approval, and is attached here (includes illustration of note and transformation of portrait). Imagery has been scanned and text is being developed and assembled into a PowerPoint. PDF of the draft PowerPoint also attached. If accepted, the final version will be delivered in August, 2016.
