Abstract
Many, but not all, faculty members may choose to empower students through supportive mentoring relationships. Fresko and Wertheim (2006: 149) contend that ‘mentoring is an educational tool of empowerment’. In this writing, I explore the concept of power and empowerment in faculty–student mentoring relationships. I examine models that reflect these ideals and include reflective discussion aimed at improving mentoring practice to encompass principles of empowerment.
