Abstract

EXPERIENCES NO. 1 (2018), structured in collaboration with CSU Dance Company with musicians Charles Fernandez and Eli Manos • Sound Of Silence John Cage Concert, Music and Communications, April 26, 2018 The extensive collaboration between John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham is a very important part of concert dance history. Cunningham's use of chance as a choreographic technique has been the inspiration for the dancers to create this work. The order of the specific movements was determined randomly and the order of the encounters were numbered and drawn from a hat. As was often the case in the Cage and Cunningham collaborations, the dancers will make decisions in the moment about specific timing in relation to the music, particularly in terms of the sound qualities and the silences. The improvisational chance encounters with each other and the overall scheme of this dance unfolded in an unpredictable way to Cage's beautiful piano score.
