Family Networks and Wellbeing of Caregivers for Economically Disadvantaged Advanced Cancer Patients

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

This study investigates the role of family networks in supporting (or not) the well-being of caregivers providing end-of-life care for a family member with advanced cancer. Prior literature has shown family to be a crucial support for caregivers, and this study builds on that work to show how the characteristics of family networks shape that support, and by extension, influence caregiver health and mental health. Drawing from two urban hospitals serving underserved communities, the researchers interviewed a purposive sample of 309 low to medium-income advanced cancer patients and their family caregivers shortly after diagnosis and again 3 months later.  Preliminary results indicate that socioeconomic disadvantage affects the composition of family networks and the kinds of support they provide. This in turn can place caregivers at greater risk of isolation, burden, and health and mental health consequences.
