N2 - Cleveland State University proposes a Master of Education in Health Professions Education (MEHPE). Tekian and Harris (2012) point out that although most institutions offer faculty development and other enrichment programs for health professions leaders, the “master’s degree is rapidly becoming the credential of choice” for institutions that offer professional medical education. Barrows argues for the need for programs such as the proposed MEHPE, saying “Anyone with a responsibility for educating students, residents and physicians should be skilled and well informed about medical education - as preparing these learners to provide safe, humane and effective care for the members of our society is a heavy responsibility." The proposed master’s degree offers an organized, rigorous, and comprehensive approach to developing skills necessary for the medical and health professions education leader. The focus of this master’s degree will be on providing the skills and knowledge necessary to educate adults who are physicians, nurses, and other medical and health educators. The creation of this program acknowledges that excellent physicians or nurses may not necessarily possess the skills and knowledge to be an exceptional educator of physicians, nurses, and other medical and health professionals. An organized and purposeful master’s degree, such as this proposed degree, is an excellent vehicle to provide the needed knowledge, skills, and credentials essential for medical educators to develop their expertise in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of education for medical and health professionals. The Master of Education in Health Professions Education (MSHPE) program is designed for physicians, nurses and other medical, health and clinical educators, and all health sciences professions. The MEHPE program’s mission is to impart the knowledge, skills and behaviors incumbent in effective teaching, administration and leadership to students who desire advanced training in medical education. The MEHPE program will provide opportunities for medical professionals throughout Ohio and neighboring states who are responsible for and/or interested in developing expertise in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of education for medical and health professionals to participate in an on-site, highly interactive curriculum. Since health care continues to grow in size and importance in our economy, so does the demand for well trained and effective health professionals; thus, we must find ways to improve how we organize and prepare health care professionals. The proposed master’s program is designed to provide this resource
