Abstract
Targeted delivery system transports a drug or gene to its site of action and maximizes its therapeutic efficiency and minimizes its systemic toxicity. Targeted delivery system is constructed by modifying a macromolecular carrier loaded with a drug or gene with specific targeting ligand. Glycans are functional biomolecules in the cells and are involved in various physiological and pathological pathways. Due to their specific receptor recognition ability, glycans serve as targeting ligands for targeted drug or gene delivery. On the other hand, abnormal expression of glycans on the cell surface can be recognized by specific glycan-binding proteins (GBPs) like lectins and presents targets for drug or gene delivery as well. This chapter discusses recent advances and applications of glyco-targeted delivery systems in two categories: (i) Using glycan ligands for specific GBP targets and (ii) using lectins for specific glycan targets, respectively.
