Abstract
Health outcomes refer to patients’ biomedical, behavioral, and self-reported health status measures related to medical interventions for improving health and well-being. Previous literature documents how effective clinician-patient communication helps generate good health outcomes for patients. This review identifies the direct and indirect pathways linking communication to improved health outcomes based on the functional model of patient-centered communication and the pathway model of clinician-patient communication and health outcomes. These pathways include access to needed care, increasing patient understanding, therapeutic alliance, emotional management, patient empowerment, and quality medical decisions.
