Abstract
EDM 341: Rotation 2 – Mini Lesson Plan & Post-Lesson Reflective Log (Fall, 2017) I designed and implemented the attached (co-taught) lesson plan (called a “Mini Lesson” so as to be less daunting) which was Rotation 2 Interns’ first attempt at co-teaching a lesson in a middle school setting. To set up the lesson planning prior to their field work, I used a National Geographic site specifically designed for middle school (with articles, visuals and videos in every content area) and then I taught lesson planning in three ways: 1. The first time through the planning, I gave each intern a copy of the blank lesson and selected a video that was common for all content areas (on the Dust Bowl storms in OK in the 1930’s) and we developed the lesson plan together as a whole class; 2. The second time through, the Interns sat in small groups by collected content areas (all math folks; all science folks; etc.), or by matching content areas (e.g., ELA & SS, etc.); 3. By the third time through the lesson planning (when interns were ready to actually plan a lesson in pairs for co-teaching), OFS had provided a list of Mentor Teacher/ Student match possibilities (which let me sort the mentors with students and pair everyone so the interns could begin to work with their actual partner for the field). As a result of practicing lesson planning three times prior to going to the field, I feel our interns were well prepared and had the confidence to spend more time teaching and less time worrying about the value/depth/validity of the lesson plan (because they knew how to plan a good lesson). NOTE: I am attaching three (3) documents: 1) a filled-in copy of one intern's co-taught lesson plan; 2) an intern's completed Post Lesson Reflection (posted on Blackboard 72 hrs after intern receives my Observation); and 3) my Observation of the interns' lesson (so you can see the process I set up for this class.
