Abstract

Chapter proposal was accepted via non-blind review in Spring 2019. Handbook will be published in 2020. Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the continuing significance of mentoring to the field of adult and continuing education, extending and updating Hansman’s (2000) chapter on mentoring published in the Wilson and Hays (2000) Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education. Specifically, the intention of this chapter is to expand the understandings and frameworks of mentoring and how they are embedded within many adult and continuing education contexts. The chapter begins with a brief review of the scholarly genealogy of mentoring, and then focuses on research, complexities, power relationships, and mentoring models that frame mentoring in formal and informal adult education contexts. In the conclusion, we explore current and potential future mentoring challenges, issues and research opportunities
