Abstract
This historic marker commemorates the active role of Rev. Odie M. Hoover and the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in confronting the social ills that plagued their community. A committed advocate for civil rights, Rev. Hoover made Olivet a leading voice in the movement. As a close friend of Dr. Martin L. King Jr.—a relationship that began during their ministries in Montgomery, Alabama—Rev. Hoover welcomed Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to use Olivet as their headquarters whenever they visited Cleveland.
