Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

The scandal known as “Operation Car Wash” involves corruption investigations that began in 2014 which reached the highest levels of the Brazilian government and corporate elite. The investigations have implicated Brazilian President Michel Temer, former Brazilian presidents, and dozens of cabinet officials and senators. Lava Jato (Operation Car Wash) and related investigations have led to severe prison sentences for top corporate executives and government politicians, massive corporate layoffs, and billions of dollars paid in fines. Millions of Brazilian citizens have demonstrated in favor of the corruption investigations, and many Brazilians hope that shedding light on the scandals will end the widespread corruption that has plagued their country.
