Abstract

Given that the press is one of the most important cultural forums cultivated by Jews and Arabs in Latin America, this essay tackles the discursive practices of Christian Palestinian and Jewish immigrant communities as it is articulated in their respective communal press in Chile since the Palestinian Intifadah in September 2000. Specifically, it aims at exploring similarities and/or tensions in their self and mutual representation tactics, and in their possible advocacy of Middle Eastern agendas. In fact, Chile represents a unique case study. Apart from having a growing political and economic role in the Middle East, Chile's Palestinian immigrant community is one of the largest outside of the Middle East, and one of the most active in lobbying for the Palestinian cause. Chile also has a solid Jewish presence. Thus exploring the communal press of the Palestinian and Jewish communities in Chile provides a context that contributes to understanding the different nuances of the trans-regional bonds between Arabs and Jews. © 2011 Taylor & Francis.
