Abstract

This is a PowerPoint presentation (20 minutes) documenting the first woman to be removed from the ancient histories of philosophy and have her views attributed instead to a male philosopher. I introduce historical and archeological evidence that the views of DIotima of Mantinea, (c. 500 BCE) taught by her to Socrates and summarized by Socrates in Plato's dialogue The Symposium were her own views (and not those of either Socrates or of Plato), and that it was not until the 1400s that any scholar claimed Diotima was a fictitious character created by Plato. This was invited, then blind peer-reviewed.
