Podium Presentation: Quality Matters-Informed Online Course Design for Promoting Student Engagement

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Students engagement is key to successful teaching and learning. However, engaging students presents a particular challenge in online learning environments. Research shows that being intentional in designing courses to increase students’ engagement can positively impact students’ overall learning, engagement, and academic achievement. In addition, the literature demonstrates that students’ engagement is improved when courses apply Quality matters (QM) standards. Quality matters is one of the most widely adopted sets of standards for best practices in online courses and includes general and specific standards related to learner engagement. This session will demonstrate the importance of deliberate course design in the pursuit of actively engaging nursing students in online course settings. The presenter will showcase an approach for implementing Quality Matters-informed online course design with a focus on strategies that are founded in Quality matters (QM) standards and could be integrated into the design of online nursing courses to foster a high level of students’ engagement. This presentation will show how one nursing course used unique and engaging strategies to meet the QM Standards.
