Abstract
Pretty Vacant is a multimedia project comprised of a short documentary and a virtual reality experience. The project will capture the story of a site-specific community art project in the Slavic Village Neighborhood in Cleveland, during which abandoned and blighted houses slated for demolition are transformed into temporary art installations. The project has two components. The first part is a short documentary (20 to 30 minutes in estimated running time) which captures the process of transformation of dilapidated space into an art installation. The second component is a virtual reality experience which aims to capture these spaces as a piece of immersive media. This will allow the viewer to experience these art spaces/installations offsite through the use of virtual reality headsets even after the homes are demolished. Combining conventional filmmaking practices and emerging technologies such as virtual reality has been an effective media strategy in recent years in the film industry. Through this combined approach audiences are able to relate to complex stories through varying modes of media. Project status: We have secured access to story, location and characters. Production will take place in May, 2019.
