Abstract
We argue that social construction theory can be used to inform data gathering techniques before launching a mediation program. Focus groups were consulted to gather attitudes, metaphors, and perceptions of a proposed mediation program. The results influenced decisions about the program structure. The influence of the focus group analysis on revised program structure are shared. Framing programmatic decisions in light of socially constructed ideas of conflict should ensure better program utilization and impact.
