Strengthening Regional Workforce Pipelines: Analyzing AI Skill Demands and Engaging Employers

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

This interdisciplinary project investigates how the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping workforce expectations in Northeast Ohio and identifies the competencies students will need to thrive in AI-impacted professions. As AI and generative AI tools transform public service, education, communication, and urban affairs, higher education must respond with curricula that reflect emerging workplace demands. To address this need, the project integrates two complementary approaches. First, a systematic content analysis of regional job postings from sources such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and the Plain Dealer will identify the AI-related skills, literacies, and expectations currently embedded in job descriptions across fields represented in the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education. Second, the team will design and pilot a two-part employer survey to capture nuanced perspectives on AI skill requirements, including desired competencies for new hires, anticipated future needs, and the financial and organizational implications of adopting AI technologies. Survey development will draw from existing AI competency frameworks and will be refined through think-aloud protocols with faculty and regional employers. Findings will provide actionable guidance for updating courses, advising practices, and workforce development initiatives to ensure CSU students graduate prepared for an evolving labor market.
