Supporting Vulnerable Students in Stressful Times

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

In response to a national ban on immigrants from primarily Muslim countries and extensive media coverage of the ban, as well as of Syrian refugees I worked with a team from the National Association of School Psychologists to produce a series of handouts for school professionals and parents on helping youth understand this media coverage. A number of contentious student interactions around the current political climate have plagued schools across the U.S. including in local Shaker Heights. NASP has always been committed to helping support marginalized students, and to reduce bullying in schools while increasing positive school climate. These handouts were part of an effort to realize this commitment in the face of current unrest. These handouts have since been circulated nationally, and a series of webinars and presentations are being built around them.
