Abstract

Many cities across the United States are struggling to transition to sustainable development. The city of Cleveland, Ohio, is no exception; however, in 2009, it took the unusual path of using the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) Summit process to engage a broad group of stakeholders in envisioning a new sustainable local economy for the Cleveland region. Cleveland's plan, Sustainable Cleveland 2019, is built on the vision of the city becoming a Green City on a Blue Lake by 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River fire that helped to launch the environmental movement in the United States This article describes the AI Summit process, how it was applied in Cleveland and the outcomes of the two summits that have been held thus far. © SAGE Publications 2012.
