Abstract
This sole-authored news book was published this year. It was a full-court press scholarly book on news in the social media era, featuring current contours, normative philosophies, and determinants of news, from conventional news through online citizen journalism websites through news shared on Facebook. Beginning with examples of the ways the scourge of race is covered in three different news outlets, the book takes readers on a concept-focused tour of the contours, continuities, and changing features of news. The book introduces students to normative theories of what news should do, its colorful history in America, popular myths of news, such as liberal news bias, the overarching role that news values, sources, and online routines play in news production, major economic determinants of news, and social system influences, particularly the controversial hegemony concept. The book ends with a nuanced, upbeat discussion of innovative trends in journalism. The book draws extensively on scholarship in the fields of journalism studies and sociology of news.
