Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study teacher candidates’ responses to local history and their consideration of the relationship of local history to current educational policy. In creating the space to sustain the ripple effect on a generation now 50 years into the present, the course attended to national and local history of efforts to ensure equality of educational opportunity. The particular local history involves community activism in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s concerning equality of educational opportunity in Cleveland public schools.. Our paper paper considers the following research question: In what way does the opportunity to explore local historical events regarding community mobilization for educational equity nurture critical engagement with the current educational context among undergraduate students?
