Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the perception Spanish speakers in the area of Cleveland, Ohio have on Puerto Rican Spanish. In order to have a better idea about the attitudes towards Puerto Rican Spanish, a group of Spanish speakers participated in a questionnaire to share their opinions on the topic. TTie study includes a language attitude questionnaire with the participation of 113 Spanish native speakers from Cleveland Metropolitan Area. Puerto Rican Spanish is the most common variety Spanish in the region; however, there are also speakers from other varieties of Spanish as well. The questions included in the questionnaire serve to examine the prestige of Puerto Rican Spanish in the region, and the impact of language attitudes in education.
