Towards Authenticity and Integrity: Rethinking Assessment Practices in the Age of Generative AI.

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

n this session, we will discuss the principles of authentic assessment and provide some suggestions on evaluating your course assessments to respond to the wide availability of GenAI. We will share what we learned when we asked BingChat for responses to some of our existing assessments, what we did to modify those assessments, and how our students responded.A key hallmark of this conference is that all 25-minute presentations are expected to be interactive. What is your plan to engage the attendees? (leave blank if you are planning for a poster session) (50-100 words)   Initially, we will invite participants to share examples of assessments they currently use, focusing on those that encourage responsible use of Generative AI, like BingChat. This sharing session will foster a collaborative atmosphere and offer insights into diverse disciplinary approaches. Subsequently, we will introduce our specially developed Assessment Evaluation Rubric. Attendees will be encouraged to apply this rubric to their real-life shared examples, facilitating a hands-on experience. This approach will enhance understanding and enable participants to directly assess and refine their current assessment strategies in the context of emerging AI technologies.Explain how your presentation will be transferable to conference participants from many academic fields. (50-100 words)   We will delve deeply into the concept of authentic assessment, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of how authentic assessments genuinely measure student learning. The interdisciplinary nature of our team allows us to provide participants with a wide range of examples and experiences applicable to various academic fields and learning contexts. The main focus is designing tasks that reflect real-world scenarios, encourage higher-order thinking, align with learning objectives, and use AI as a thinking partner. Authentic assessments are more engaging and foster relevant transferable skills across disciplines. Any educator looking to enhance the validity and effectiveness of their evaluation methods in an increasingly digital and AI-integrated academic environment should attend. What will be the three biggest takeaways (information, tool, website, application, idea, etc.) participants can expect from your presentation?   Takeaway 1: -- • Understanding Authentic Assessment Principles: Participants will learn the fundamental principles of authentic assessment, including its definition, importance, and how it differs from traditional assessment methods. This will deepen participants' comprehension of authentic assessment as a tool to evaluate student learning effectively in a way that mirrors real-world applications.   Takeaway 2: -- • Evaluating and Modifying Assessments in the Age of GenAI: Attendees will gain insights relevant to evaluating and adapting their current course assessments following authentic assessment principles in response to the challenges posed by Generative AI tools like BingChat. This includes various strategies to ensure assessments remain robust, valid, and relevant in an environment where students can access advanced AI technologies. Participants will discuss how such approaches may apply to evaluating and modifying their current assessment practice.   Takeaway 3: -- • Analyzing Real-World Adaptation and Student Responses: The session will provide participants with an understanding of the practical implications of modifying assessments based on real case studies and experiences. This includes sharing findings from the presenters' own experiences in asking BingChat for responses to assessments, the modifications made, and how students reacted to these changes. Participants will learn how to anticipate and manage student responses to new forms of assessment.
