Trauma-Informed Life Skills

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

This training is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of occupational therapy practitioners by integrating polyvagal theory into clinical practice. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the key tenets of trauma-informed care through the lens of polyvagal theory and learn how to apply these concepts using a case study approach. The training will focus on identifying signs of dysregulation in adult clients, with a specific emphasis on exploring regulation strategies tailored to the autonomic nervous system's hierarchical needs. Finally, participants will examine the impact of trauma on the development of life skills and explore trauma-informed interventions that support holistic healing and functional improvement. Examples of life skills addressed in this training include: finances, clutter and organization, nutrition, sleep, social connections, and others. By the end of the training, participants will be equipped with practical tools to enhance their therapeutic approaches, fostering better client outcomes through a deeper understanding of autonomic regulation, trauma-informed care, and life skill development.
