Abstract

The geographic region called the “Bible Belt” has a rich tradition laden in conservative religious beliefs and spiritual practices. For members of the LGBTQ community, religion and spirituality can be a risk factor and a protective factor. Many LGBTQ persons are active members of their religious community yet they also receive messages that they are sinful and must “turn from their perverted lifestyles.” Mental health professionals are called to consider the intersection of religion/spirituality, region of origin, and sexual orientation to best support LGBT clients therapeutic growth. This chapter deconstructs historically condemning scriptures by emphasizing the importance of historical and textual context.
