Brief Bio:
Michael Baumgartner's research interests are music in relation to the other arts (moving images, theatre and contemporary visual arts) and the exploration of the narrative capacity of music. In particular, he explores the music of Kurt Weill, Thea Musgrave, Duke Ellington and Alfred Schnittke. Another area of interest is film music. Baumgartner currently writes a monograph on Jean-Luc Godard's use of music in his films. Together with Ewelina Boczkowska (Youngstown State University), he currently edits an anthology on music in European post-war cinema. Baumgartner has also presented at numerous conferences throughout North America and Europe, including annual meetings of the American Musicological Society, the Royal Musical Association, the Society for American Music, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, Music and the Moving Image, and other conferences such as the Sixth and Seventh Biennial International: Conference on Music since 1900, the Sixteenth Biennial Conference on Nineteenth-Century Music and Feminist Theory and Music 10.
